Raifukutei
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Higashi-Asakusa's neighborhood Chinese diner Raifukutei, diners can enjoy retro shitamachi flavors, from a hearty plate of moist fried rice paired with half ramen to wonton noodles loaded with thick-cut char siu.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step into Raifukutei along the street in Higashi-Asakusa, and the set menus anchored by fried rice immediately stand out. Unlike the typical combo pairing a bowl of ramen with a small side of fried rice, here the fried rice takes center stage, served alongside a half portion of ramen. Flecked with finely minced ingredients, the fried rice arrives moist, satisfyingly generous, and imbued with an honest, comforting seasoning that is easy to enjoy down to the last spoonful. Even in its half-portion guise, the accompanying ramen comes properly appointed with sliced pork, seasoned bamboo shoots, and leafy greens, making it a hearty counterpoint to the rice.
For those keen to focus on noodles, the generously topped char siu wonton noodles are hard to miss. A bowl comes filled with delicate wontons, thick slices of well-marinated roasted pork, and bamboo shoots, delivering ample satisfaction in a single dish. The broader selection also caters readily to different cravings: there is tanmen matching chewy noodles with a distinctly salted broth and a boiled egg, as well as nostalgic, Western-diner-style chicken rice garnished with red pickled ginger.
Inside, counter seats, regular tables, and a small raised tatami area preserve the unpretentious character of the old downtown district. Around midday, locals drop in casually, often sharing dumplings or stir-fries alongside a chilled beer. Bear in mind that payment is cash only, so having yen on hand ensures a seamless visit.
